One of the most painful realities for many widows in rural Africa is the loss of land rights after the death of a spouse. For generations, widows have farmed land that sustains their families, only to lose it to relatives or community systems that deny them ownership and voice. Without land, their livelihoods, dignity, and identity are stripped away.
That’s why Her Farm Story, through MazaoHub, has introduced an initiative focused on securing land tenure and legal protection for widows. Working closely with village authorities, landowners, and partner lawyers, we help women reclaim their rightful land, obtain proper documentation, and understand their legal rights. Beyond recovering land, we empower widows through rights education, teaching them how to navigate land disputes, register ownership, and make informed decisions about their property and production.
But our work doesn’t stop at land security; it extends to value addition and income growth. Once women secure their land, we help them unlock its full potential by supporting them in coffee, avocado, and poultry value chains. Through agronomy support, digital advisory tools, and market linkages, these women are learning to process, package, and sell their products for higher returns.
With this integrated approach, widows not only reclaim their land but also gain the skills and confidence to transform it into sustainable enterprises.
Today, more widows are beginning to farm again, not as laborers, but as rightful landholders and agri-entrepreneurs. They can plan long-term, cultivate high-value crops, and access financing because their ownership is recognized. Each reclaimed piece of land and each improved harvest represents a step toward justice, economic independence, and generational security.
