Her Farm, Her Story: From Silence to Soil, From Injustice to Power

By Alexandra Ngaiza

When my grandfather passed away, something deeply unjust happened my mother, who had spent years laboring on our family farm, nurturing the land, investing her time, love, and sweat—was denied the right to inherit it. She was the one who knew every tree, every season, every corner of that land. But tradition saw her as a woman first not as a farmer, not as a rightful heir. And just like that, she was excluded. That memory never left me.

Years later, as I traveled across Tanzania with MazaoHub from Singida to Rukwa, from Njombe to Mbeya I realized something even more painful: my mother’s story was not an exception it was the story of countless women. I met women who produce the food that feeds entire communities, yet they have no land titles, no access to loans, no seat at the table where decisions are made. I met young girls full of passion and potential who dream of becoming farmers but who are already being taught that the land is not theirs to own. That’s when I knew: we had to do something. And not just for them for my mother too. That’s how Her Farm, Her Story was born. Not as a program. But as a vow. A vow to never let what happened to my mother happen in silence again.

At MazaoHub, we are not only building technology we are restoring dignity. Through our Farmer Excellent Centers, we provide access to soil testing, personalized agronomy support, market linkages, and data-driven insights that help women farm smarter. But beyond that, we are fighting for their right to own, to earn, and to lead. We're building tools that help women be visible to banks, cooperative leaders, and policymakers. We're guiding girls to believe that agriculture isn’t just survival it’s a path to power. And with each woman who takes that first step toward land ownership, toward financial independence, toward being seen we are rewriting the story. Her Farm, Her Story is personal for me, for my family, and for the future we are shaping. But it’s not a journey we can walk alone. We need you. We need partners, policymakers, and believers to stand with us. To stand with the woman who wakes at dawn to till soil she does not own. To stand with the girl who dreams of being more than just a helper. To help us build a world where gender does not determine who eats, who earns, or who owns. 📩 To support or partner with us, email herfarmherstory@gmail.com 🌐 Visit: www.herfarmstory.org Together, let’s empower women—one farm, one story at a time.

Any woman who is actively involved in farming whether on a small plot or larger acreage is welcome to join. You do not need to own land or have formal training. All you need is a willingness to learn, grow, and support other women farmers in your community.

Joining Malkia wa Shamba groups is completely free. Some optional services, like soil testing or input packages, may have small associated costs—but they are subsidized and tailored to your needs. Group savings schemes are voluntary and community-led.

Members receive personalized agronomy support, access to soil testing and digital profiles, connections to markets and financing, and regular training on climate-smart agriculture. Most importantly, they become part of a supportive network of women committed to growing together.
